There are moments in this life where something shifts—not because it is new, but because it finally fits.
My first time wearing full cow at South East Leather Fest was one of those moments.
Not costume.
Not performance.
Not dress-up.
A recognition of self.
Because what Gaines names in that quote is something you don’t fully understand until you feel it on your body.
Leather has weight.
Not just physically—but culturally. Spiritually. Interpersonally.
When I stepped into full cow, I wasn’t putting something on.
I was stepping into something that already existed—something with history, expectation, and standards.
Something that already fit without alteration—whether I was ready for it or not.

Honor
Honor is not stitched into the vest.
It is not granted by visibility.
Honor is what you carry into the leather.
Gaines’ words make that clear—anyone can wear it. Anyone can play in it.
But leather, as an expression of the soul, reveals whether there is anything there to express.
Wearing full cow didn’t give me honor.
It required me to be honest about whether I was living with it already.

Integrity
Integrity is the throughline.
Who you are in the dungeon.
Who you are in the streets and hallways.
Who you are when nobody knows your name—and when you don’t exist to anyone at all.
Leather does not separate those versions of you.
It narrows them down into two questions:
Are you consistent?
Are you authentic?
Because if leather is an expression of the soul, then inconsistency isn’t hidden—it’s exposed,
and your authenticity is not assumed—it is weighed, interrogated, and appraised.

Loyalty
Loyalty in Leather is not aesthetic allegiance.
It is relational.
To people.
To structure.
To culture.
To history.
Standing at South East Leather Fest in full cow, I understood that I was not just expressing myself.
I was stepping into a lineage.
Not just wearing leather—but being seen in relation to others who do WIITWD(What It Is That We Do).
That comes with responsibility.
Because loyalty is not about proximity.
It is about how you show up over time.

Trust
Trust is where everything lands.
Because leather will attract attention.
But attention is not trust.
Trust is built in consistency.
In accountability.
In keeping your word.
In how you handle power, authority, and access to others.
If leather is an expression of the soul, then trust is the measure of whether that expression is safe to engage.

That first moment in full cow was not about finally “looking like” something.
It was about being confronted with a question:
If this is an expression of my soul—what exactly am I expressing?
And more importantly:
Is it aligned with Honor, Integrity, Loyalty, and Trust?
Because leather does not answer that question for you.
Leather holds you to it—firm, unyielding,
just as it grips the body.
